This BENEDICTS REAGENT is qualitative. It is a mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium citrate and copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate. It is used for the detection of reducing sugars. The test is based on the principle that reducing sugars when heated in the presence of an alkali, are converted to powerful reducing species known as enediols. These enediols reduce the cupric compounds present in the Benedict's reagent to cuprous compounds which are precipitated as insoluble red copper (I) oxide (Cu2O). Benedicts reagent has a variety of applications in chemical and biological sectors. It is used in the test for monosaccharides and reducing disaccharide sugars. It detects the presence of aldehydes and alpha-hydroxy-ketones, also by hemiacetal, including those that occur in certain ketoses. The precipitate colour gives a rough indication of sugar concentration, where greenish precipitate indicates about 0.5 g % concentration, yellow precipitate indicates 1 g % concentration, orange indicates 1.5 g % and red indicates 2 g % or higher concentration.
