BENEDICTS REAGENT (quantitative) is a product provided by Research-Lab Fine Chem Industries. Laboratory reagents are chemicals which are used in laboratories as a part of experimental procedures. These reagents can be important parts of chemical reactions, analytical reagents or starting material for the production of other materials.
This BENEDICTS REAGENT is quantitative. It is a mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium citrate and copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate as well as potassium thiocyanate. The test is based on the principle that reducing sugars when heated in the presence of an alkali, are converted to powerful reducing species known as enediols. These enediols reduce the cupric compounds present in the Benedict's reagent to cuprous compounds which are precipitated as insoluble red copper (I) oxide (Cu2O). Benedicts reagent has a variety of applications in chemical and biological sectors. This test for monosaccharides and reducing disaccharide sugars detects the presence of aldehydes and alpha-hydroxy-ketones, also by hemiacetal, including those that occur in certain ketoses. The quantitative test solution forms a copper thiocyanate precipitate which can be titrated to determine sugar concentration. The titration is to be repeated with 1% glucose solution instead of the sample for calibration. This reagent is suitable for industrial synthesis of products and research applications.
