Mercurous nitrate is available as a colorless powder in the usually available dihydrate form. It also exists in the white monoclinic anhydrous form but usually exists as the dihydrate. It can be used to synthesize other mercury(I) compounds. It is slightly soluble in water and becomes slightly acidic due to reaction with water. It is toxic by ingestion and inhalation. It decomposes when heated and fumes may contain toxic mercury vapor and oxides of nitrogen. It can cause tightness and pain in chest, coughing, and difficulty in breathing.
