MOPS is provided by Genei for use in molecular biology laboratories. MOPS (CAS No.: 1132-61-2), or (3-(N-Morpholino)propanesulfonic acid, is used in the laboratory as a part of a strong buffer, called MOPS buffer. It has a pKa of 7.2 and has the capacity to maintain an almost neutral pH (6.5 - 7.9). The MOPS buffer mainly contains MOP free acid, sodium acetate and EDTA salt of sodium. The buffer also has the unique property of inertness, that is, it does not interact with metal ions, thus avoiding hindrance in the tests.
MOPS buffer finds several applications in laboratory:
(d) It is used as a buffer in RNA gels.
(e) It is added in cell culture media for adjustment of pH.
(f) It is also used as a buffer for extraction of nucleic acid, particularly for RNA isolation.
MOPS sodium salt (CAS number 71119-22-7) is prepared by titrating the MOPS free acid against sodium hydroxide.
