It is also used as a precursor for forming amalgam with metals. Amalgams such as aluminum amalgam can undergo a variety of reactions and is widely used can be used in various organic chemical synthesis. It was once used in the development of positive pictures in the collodion process of the 1800s. It was also used for preserving biological specimens and in the treatment of wood against moths, mites and mold. It has also a historic evidence of being used in crimes.
