Peptone Water can be used as a base for studying carbohydrate fermentation by adding sugar and indicators such as bromocresol purple, phenol red, or bromothymol blue. This medium is recommended for determining an organism's ability to ferment a particular carbohydrate, which can aid in the differentiation of genera and species. Essential nutrients are supplied by peptic digest of animal tissue. To investigate the capability of fermentation of carbohydrates, saccharose, rhamnose, and salicin are commonly incorporated in a concentration of 0.5% individually to the basic medium either prior to or after sterilization.
