The water testing kit consists of Medium A for the detection of Salmonella, E.coli and Citrobacter species) and Medium B (for detection of Vibrio species). The water test kit media has ingredients such as peptone (special), sucrose, sodium thiosulphate, sodium citrate, bile salt, sodium chloride and indicator mix. In Medium A, peptone is a source of many essential nutrients. Ferric ammonium citrate and sodium thiosulphate are converted to H2S by enteric species. Acid production is induced by Lactose fermenters and pH is lowered and the colour changes. In Medium B, peptone provides nitrogen, carbon, sulphur, and vitamin B complex along with some other nutrients. The alkaline pH of medium helps in the revival of Vibrio species.
