2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is a high-grade reagent supplied by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries. Few other names used to denote this reagent include, 2-Methyloxolane, Methyltetrahydrofuran, Tetrahydrosylvan and Tetrahydro-2-methylfuran. It is a highly flammable mobile liquid and may form peroxides. 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is "inversely soluble" in water. That is, its solubility decreases with increasing temperature, which is considered to be a rare property. 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is usually synthesized by catalytic hydrogenation of furfural. It can also be produced using levulinic acid as the starting component. It is stable as long it is stored as per the recommended storage conditions. Burning or prolonged exposure to heat or flammable sources may produce hazardous decomposition products like carbon oxides. 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is incompatible with strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidising agents. CAS No. 96-47-9 Quantity provided: 100 ml/bottle Molecular formula: C5H10O Molecular weight: 86.134 g/mol Assay: Minimum 99%2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is mainly used as a higher boiling substitute for tetrahydrofuran as a specialty solvent. It is also used in the electrolyte formulation for secondary lithium electrodes and as a component in alternative fuels. It is a valued solvent for low temperature reactions since 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran forms a glass, which does not crystallize, and is frequently used as a solvent for spectroscopic studies at 196 C. It is also used as a solvent for Grignard reagents used in organometallic and biphasic chemical processes, because of the oxygen atom's ability to coordinate to the magnesium ion component of the Grignard reagent, or to azeotropically dry products.
