BILE SALT AGAR is supplied by TM MEDIA. It is used for isolation and enumeration of bile tolerant enteric bacilli.Bile Salt Agar is formulated as recommended for isolation, identification, and enumeration of Vibrio cholerae. Vibrio species, like many other gram-negative bacteria, grow in the presence of relatively high levels of bile salts. On Bile Salt Agar colonies of Vibrio's have a distinctive appearance which may be seen by growing a known strain of Vibrio cholerae and comparing it with Escherichia coli.The medium contains peptone, an extract that provides carbonaceous, nitrogenous compounds, and other essential growth nutrients. Sodium chloride buffers the medium-well. Sodium taurocholate inhibits most gram-negative organisms.
