Agarose is obtained in its raw form (agar) from a type of seaweed. Further purification of the crude from yields agarose, which has a unique gelling property. It completely dissolves in water when heated to a high temperature and once it cools down, it forms a gel. Agarose has a very high hysteresis, thus making it a very good gel. This property of agarose is used to prepare gels for electrophoresis of nucleic acids. The agarose gel creates a porous matrix wherein the nucleic acids move under the influence of an electric charge and separate out based on their molecular weights. Gels of different porosity can be created by increasing or decreasing the concentration of agarose.

The High-Resolution Agarose by Genei is specially designed for agarose gel electrophoresis of small size nucleic acid fragments like PCR products, AFLP, STR and tri and tetranucleotide repeat sequences. It is also suitable for the resolution of fragments with as small as a 2% size difference between them within the range of 20 bp and 800 bp. The melting temperature is 75C, which allows the recovery of fragments smaller than 800 bp.
