High grade MacConkey Broth (Double strength) w/Neutral Red is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a cream to yellow coloured homogeneous free flowing powder with a pH in the range of 7.3 to 7.7. For maximum efficiency, it must be stored below 30C in tightly closed container.

MacConkey Broth (Double strength) is recommended for detection of bacteria responsible for food poisoning and for the isolation, identification and enumeration of Escherichia coli. MacConkey Broth (Double strength) is also recommended for the primary isolation of coliforms from large samples such as water and wastewater. This media is also used for the Examination of Milk and Dairy Products and pharmaceutical preparations. The selective action of this medium is attributed to bile salts, which are inhibitory to most species of gram-positive bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria usually grow well on the medium and are differentiated by their ability to ferment lactose. Lactose fermenting strains grow as yellow. Lactose non-fermenting strains, such as Shigella and Salmonella are colourless and typically do not alter appearance of the medium. Pancreatic digest of gelatin and peptones (meat and casein) present in the medium, provide the essential nutrients, vitamins and nitrogenous factors required for growth of microorganisms. Lactose monohydrate is the fermentable source of carbohydrate. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance in the medium. It also contains Neutral Red.
