Mercuric bromide or mercury(II) bromide from Research-Lab Fine Chem Industries is of analytical grade and is available as white crystals with orthorhombic structure. It is highly soluble in water and very slightly soluble in ether. It has a melting point of 237 C (459 F; 510 K) and a boiling point of 322 C (612 F; 595 K). It is very toxic and should not be inhaled or ingested. It is used as a laboratory reagent in reactions like the KoenigsKnorr reaction. It is also used to test the presence of arsenic in chemical samples. It can form explosive mixtures when mixed with potassium and can react violently with elemental indium at high temperatures.
