N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine has a wide range of applications in various sectors. It is commonly known for its applications in the treatment of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose and to loosen thick mucus in people with cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This compound is further used in Petroff's method which involves liquefaction and decontamination of sputum, in preparation for recovery of mycobacterium. Acetylcysteine has been hypothesized to be beneficial in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It is undergoing clinical trials for this disorder among others.
