High grade Phenol Red Broth Base is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a light yellow to pink homogeneous free flowing powder with a pH in the range of 7.2 to 7.6. For maximum efficiency, it must be stored below 30C in tightly closed container.

Phenol Red Broth Medium is one of the recommended medium used to determine the fermentation reaction of carbohydrates for the differentiation of microorganisms. This is based on the ability of an organism to ferment a specific carbohydrate in the basal medium which results in the production of acid and gas. Phenol Red Broth Base is a complete medium without carbohydrate. It is used as a negative control for studying fermentations or as a base for the addition of carboydrates. Proteose peptone and beef extract provide nitrogenous nutrients to the organisms. Phenol red is used as the pH indicator, which turns yellow at acidic pH. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium. Phenol Red Broth Base is a complete medium without added carbohydrate, which can be used with the addition of 5-10 %, desired carbohydrate. All of the Enterobacteriaceae grow well in this medium. Sometimes, due to the production of mixed acids, notably butyric acids, a pungent, foul odour emanates from the culture medium.
