High grade Transport Medium, Amies without Charcoal is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of an off-white to yellow homogeneous free flowing powder with a pH in the range of 7.1 to 7.5. For maximum efficiency, it must be stored below 30C in tightly closed container.

Amies Transport Medium Without Charcoal is mainly used for collecting, transporting and preserving microbiological specimens. Transport Medium ideally should be non-nutritive, semisolid, reductive medium which hampers the self-destructive enzymatic reactions within the cells and also inhibits toxic oxidation effects. Amies modified Stuart's Transport Medium by replacing glycerophosphate with an inorganic phosphate buffer, hence providing a reduced environment using sodium thioglycollate and small amount of agar. Amies Medium is devoid of methylene blue. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium salts help the survival of gonococcal cells by restricting their permeability. The Chloride salts supply essential electrolytes for transport and osmotic balance. Phosphates act as a buffer system. Sodium thioglycollate suppresses oxidative changes and provides a reduced environment.
