It yields an insoluble blue compound as a result of enzyme-catalysed hydrolysis. As an analogue of lactose, it is hydrolysed by beta-galactosidase to produce galactose and 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-hydroxyindole. The latter compound dimerizes and oxidizes to yield a blue coloured compound. The compound is stable under general conditions, however, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
