High grade Azide Blood Agar Base is supplies by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a cream to yellow homogenous free flowing powder which has a pH in the range of 7.0 to 7.4. The original broth medium of Edwards is modified to a blood agar by Packer containing sodium azide and crystal violet, giving Azide blood agar. This product should be stored between 10-30C in a tightly closed container. Once opened, it should be properly stored, after tightly capping the bottle. Due to the hygroscopic nature of the product, there could be chances of lump formation which can be avoided by proper storage. Store in dry ventilated area protected from extremes of temperature and sources of ignition.

Azide Blood Agar Base is used for the selective isolation and cultivation of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species from mixed bacterial flora. Sodium azide has a bacteriostatic effect on most Gram-negative organisms but permits growth of Gram-positive organisms such as streptococci and some strains of staphylococci. At the concentration and pH used, sodium azide exerts no appreciable effect on haemolysis so that the medium, with added blood, may be used for the simultaneous determination of haemolytic reactions. Peptone special and HM Peptone B are the sources of carbon, nitrogen and essential growth factors. Sodium chloride helps to maintain the osmotic balance of the medium. If the media is supplemented with sterile defibrinated blood, the blood serves as an additional source of growth factors and it also helps to visualize the haemolytic pattern. The pH of the medium influences the inhibitory action of sodium azide.
