Beef extract is a high-grade reagent supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a brown/ black powder which has a characteristic putrid beef odour. Beef extract is stable when stored under recommended conditions. It is advisable to store it in a low humidity environment. Shield this product from moisture and light by keeping container tightly closed. If exposed to excessive heat or in case of burning, it can generate hazardous decomposition products like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Avoid contact with strong acids, strong bases and moist air or water. Beef extract powder is incompatible with oxidising agents, strong acids and bases. It may cause skin or eye irritation and it is slightly hazardous if inhaled or ingested.

It is a source of nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins, and carbon. Beef Extract Powder is usually employed in concentrations of 0.3% in culture media but concentrations can vary slightly according to the requirements of individual formulas. However, they do not generally exceed 0.5%. Culture media containing this extract find widespread use in bacteriological examination of water, milk, and other materials, where having a media with uniform composition is important.
