Blood Agar Plate W/gentamicin is supplied by TM Media. Blood Agar with Gentamicin is suggested to specifically isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae. This medium has shown improved rates of isolation for beta-hemolytic streptococci, various other streptococci, Bacteroides, clostridia, and yeasts. It is also beneficial in detecting gram-negative bacilli that are resistant to gentamicin in densely mixed cultures. Blood contains extra nutrients for growth and also functions as a foundation for identifying hemolytic reactions. Gentamicin restricts the growth of other gram-positive bacteria. To enhance the isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae from respiratory secretions, a 5% sheep blood agar plate fortified with gentamicin can be employed.
