Mercuric sulphide red is an odorless red colored solid. It is insoluble in water and sinks. It is commonly referred to as cinnabar or vermillion. It is toxic and decomposes at 580 C (1,076 F; 853 K). The red cinnabar form of mercuric sulphide is the most commonly found form in nature. It has a trigonal crystal structure and is optically active.
