The reagent is available as a white powder which is soluble in water. It has a melting point of 206 C. Sodium lauryl sulphate can be generated by treating lauryl alcohol with sulfur trioxide gas, oleum, or chlorosulphuric acid to produce hydrogen lauryl sulphate. While it is stable under general conditions, this reagent is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
