Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (USP/EP/JP/BP/IP) is supplied by TM Media. Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar is utilized to count Enterobacteriaceae in food and meets the requirements of Harmonized USP/EP/JP, but it should not be utilized to diagnose human diseases or other conditions. This medium is suggested by the Harmonized USP/EP/JP for isolating and identifying bile-tolerant Gram-negative bacteria from non-sterile products. Its composition includes yeast extract as a vitamin source, gelatin as a source of carbon and nitrogen, glucose as a fermentable carbohydrate, and sodium chloride to maintain osmotic balance. The selective agents in the medium are bile salts and crystal violet, which inhibit many Gram-positive bacteria.
